Toyota SASAPD National Championships

The Toyota SASAPD National Championships, has been the cornerstone of South African para-sport since their inception in 1962. These annual multi-sport events provide a platform for athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairments to compete at national levels, fostering talent and promoting inclusivity in sports.

Partnership with Toyota

In 2019, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) became the title sponsor of the championships, aligning with Toyota’s global commitment to supporting the Olympic and Paralympic movements. This partnership has been instrumental in enhancing the profile and reach of the event, providing athletes with improved resources and opportunities to excel.

Sports and Participation

The championships feature a diverse range of sports, including athletics, swimming, powerlifting, goalball, boccia, and judo. Each year, athletes from across the country gather to compete, set new records, and qualify for international competitions such as the Paralympic Games.

Remarkable Achievements

Over the years, the Toyota SASAPD National Championships have witnessed numerous remarkable achievements. During the 2021 championships held in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, athletes set multiple continental records, showcasing the high level of talent present in South African para-sports.

The 2023 edition, hosted in Cape Town, marked the 61st anniversary of the championships. The event attracted over 650 participants, resulting in the setting of 90 South African records, 20 Open records, five African records, and two World records. Gauteng province emerged victorious, winning the Athletics floating trophy for both senior and junior athletes, as well as the overall winning province trophy.

Recent Highlights and Upcoming Championships

The 2024 Toyota SASAPD National Championships took place in Bloemfontein, Free State, from 21 to 25 March, drawing athletes from across the nation in a highly competitive and inclusive event. Building on the success of 2024, the next championships are scheduled to begin in March 2025 in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape. This eagerly anticipated event is set to raise the bar even higher for South African para-sports.
