Nelson Mandela Bay SAPD is once again preparing for the annual Mayoral Cup taking place within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality from 15 May to 16 June.
This year, Nelson Mandela Bay SAPD will participate in CP Football and II Football as part of the tournament programme. CP Football caters for athletes with Cerebral Palsy, while II Football is for athletes with intellectual impairments.
The annual event continues to create important competition opportunities for athletes and clubs within the Metro, while also contributing towards the growth and visibility of disability sport in the region.
A major addition to this year’s competition is the inclusion of prize money for participating clubs, adding further excitement and motivation for teams preparing for the tournament.
The Mayoral Cup has also become known for the collaboration between sporting federations and structures within the province. During previous editions of the event, federations such as South African Football Association Eastern Cape assisted with coaching and referee education initiatives, helping strengthen development structures within disability football.
One of the headline clubs preparing for this year’s competition is Northern Lights Special Needs School, which has already started its preparations for the event. The club continues to play an important role in the development of disability football within the Metro and is expected to be one of the key participants during the tournament.
With preparations now underway, Nelson Mandela Bay SAPD is looking forward to another successful edition of the Mayoral Cup while continuing to create participation and development opportunities for athletes within CP Football and II Football.
