SASAPD close on a high at Toyota SASAPD National Championships

The 2026 Toyota SASAPD National Championships came to a close in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape this past Tuesday, bringing to an end a week of high-performance competition and outstanding achievement across all sport codes.

The annual event once again delivered exceptional results, with athletes showcasing their talent, determination and progression on a national stage. From track and field to swimming, boccia, goalball and team sports, the championships highlighted both elite performance and the depth of development within disability sport in South Africa.

Beyond the competition, a major focus of the week was the growing national commitment to the disability sport sector. Both South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture spoke positively about the event and reaffirmed their commitment to increasing financial support for para athletes and the federation going forward.

This commitment marks a significant step forward for South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled and its member federations. Among the dignitaries in attendance were Barry Hendricks, President of SASCOC, and Gayton McKenzie, both of whom engaged directly with SASAPD President Jean Miggels during the championships.

While the competition has concluded, the work behind the scenes continues. Administrators at both national and provincial level now shift their focus to finalising logistics, supporting team departures and ensuring athletes return home safely, while also beginning preparations for the next phase of the performance pathway.

All in all, the 2026 Toyota SASAPD National Championships can be regarded as a major success, both on and off the field, reinforcing the growing recognition and support for disability sport in South Africa.
