Day one results from the AUSC Region 5 Youth Games in Namibia saw several South African athletes from the SASAPD structures deliver confident performances in the athletics (track and field) events. The 11th edition of the Games, which runs from 3 to 15 July 2025, features Para Athletics (including visually impaired categories) and Special Olympics competitions as part of the inclusive sporting programme.
A contingent of athletes primarily from Limpopo represented South Africa in various sprint and field events, making a positive impression on the opening day.
Wamashudu Masakona (T12) competed in both the 100 m and 200 m events. Her performance in the 100 m heats was strong enough to secure a place in the final, scheduled for Day 2.
Mabitsela Malakalaka (T13) participated in the 100 m, 200 m and javelin. While her javelin attempt fell just outside of the medal positions, she delivered commendable times on the track and is set to compete in both sprint events again on Day 2.
Khotso Mohlamonyane (T13) also had a full programme, featuring in the 100 m, 200 m and long jump. Following a solid jumping series and a competitive 200 m heat, he will return to contest the 100 m final.
Skhona Masuku (T12) took part in the 100 m, 200 m and long jump. She qualified for the 100 m final and will be aiming to improve her long jump result in the next session.
The athletics events continue on Day 2 with two sessions: a morning session from 09:00 to 13:00, and an afternoon session from 16:00 to 20:00. Finals across multiple classifications are expected to be contested.
SASAPD President Jean Miggels commended the athletes and acknowledged the role of provincial administrators in preparing them for competition. She also thanked SASCOC for its logistical support in enabling participation.
“The commitment from everyone involved—from the athletes to the teams behind the scenes—has been outstanding,” said Miggels. “These performances reflect the hard work and dedication that went into ensuring readiness for this important event.”
