Mpumelelo Mhlongo: A Champion on and off the Track
Early Life and Education
Mpumelelo Mhlongo, born on March 22, 1994, in Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, has overcome congenital deformities to become a Paralympic icon.
He attended Kloof High School and Kearsney College before excelling at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where he is pursuing a PhD focused on converting plastic waste into energy.
He was a multi-award-winning student, consistently appearing on the Dean’s Merit List.
Athletic Achievements
- 2019 World Para Athletics Championships: Won silver in the T44 men’s 100m and bronze in the long jump, breaking the T44 long jump world record with a leap of 7.03 meters.
- Tokyo 2020 Paralympics: Set Paralympic records in the T44 200m, 100m, and long jump.
- Paris 2024 Paralympics: Won gold in the men’s T44 100m and bronze in the men’s T64 200m final.
Advocacy and Mentorship
Mhlongo is deeply committed to social causes. He serves as:
- Ambassador for Jumping Kids since 2016, supporting children with disabilities.
- Patron of the Chaeli Sports and Recreation Club, promoting inclusive sports.
- Clubfoot Champion Ambassador for Steps Clubfoot Care, raising awareness for individuals with clubfoot.
Personal Life
Mhlongo is multilingual, fluent in six languages, and married his university sweetheart, Monique, in 2023.
