Coetzee starts Huddle Up Thursdays

By Mark Lemke • 7 August 2026

Louzanne Coetzee spent 13 years inspiring sports fans as a para-athlete. Now, the three time Paralympic medallist is determined to inspire the next generation. The 33-year-old was the guest speaker of the first SASAPD Huddle Up Thursday on 6 August 2026, a weekly online seminar focused on celebrating women's month, where she shared her athletic journey and her strong belief in the future of South African sport.

“I never planned to become a Paralympian, but the people and the coaches I met along my journey inspired me to achieve feats I never thought were achievable. I believe I now have the powerful job of inspiring athletes going forward.”

The former T11 middle- and long-distance runner spoke vulnerably about her struggles finding a sport to pursue in university. “I signed up for the 100m sprint because no one else wanted to do it and I couldn’t compete in sports like hockey or netball. I finished second to last place, but the coach said I had potential and asked me to come train. I didn’t want to disappoint anyone, so I agreed. This happened for many years where I kept trying to make people happy and eventually, I realised that I must do this for myself too. My coaches and my loved ones supported me all the way and it led to me reaching the best version of myself possible.”

Coetzee emphasised the importance of the SASAPD family in her career and the endless inspiration from coaches, officials, and other athletes, which led her into her driving message.

“You have heard my story and the people who carried it, but my story is just one of many. There are countless stories that we do not hear every day. Sometimes we hear them, but we do not listen or appreciate them. For many athletes who will tell you that their sport saved them and has given them reasons to move forward and live.

“I don’t want to sit here and give you tips on how to inspire someone because everyone has their own unique qualities that can be used. I urge you to be true to yourself and be the best example you can to others.”

Coetzee's inspiring talk launched the SASAPD Huddle Up Thursdays perfectly. The next talk takes place on 13 August with guest speaker Corne Rossouw discussing the theme of a winning spirit.
